Child dies, 2 others hurt in Mandaluyong fire


A child was killed while at least two people were injured in a fire that hit a residential area in Mandaluyong City Monday night.
 
The fire at Block 38, Martinez Street in Welfareville, Barangay Addition Hills also destroyed 10 houses and left 15 families homeless, radio dzBB reported Tuesday.
 
Leonisita Sales, the mother of the fatality, was quoted in the report as saying that she left the child near the stairs of their burning house while she tried to get her two other children out. She failed to return for the child.
 
On the other hand, two other residents were rushed to a hospital after sustaining burns in the body.
 
An initial investigation showed the fire started at 10 p.m., and reached the fifth alarm before firefighters put it out after one hour.

The fire came hours after another fire destroyed 50 houses and left at least 80 families homeless in Manila’s downtown Sta. Cruz district.
 
No one was initially reported injured in the fire, which reached the fifth alarm as of 11:55 a.m. and was placed under control at 1 p.m., radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo reported.
 
Volunteer firefighter group TXTFire said the blaze was finally placed under control at about 1 p.m. 
 
An initial investigation showed the fire started at the house of one Eric de Guzman, and spread quickly as the other houses were made of light materials.
 
Arson investigators are still investigating what caused the fire, the latest to hit Metro Manila after the end of Fire Prevention Month last March. — RSJ, GMA News
