MMDA eyes 6-month transition to digital traffic light system
As part of its modernization program, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing a six-month period to fully convert its traffic light system from analog to digital. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said this will also keep its system compatible with that of the Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co., which is shifting to a digital system in 2012. “Pinaghahandaan natin yan. May mga kausap tayong malalaking digital traffic operator para maisakatuparan na pag-connect ang digital MMDA to digital PLDT,” Tolentino said in an interview on dzBB radio. He noted that if PLDT shifts to a digital system and the MMDA does not, the MMDA may no longer remotely control traffic lights from its Metrobase. Presently, Tolentino said Metro Manila has some 455 traffic intersections. He said a major malfunction of the traffic light system can lead to a gridlock. Tolentino hinted they may have to prioritize roads in business centers and those leading to airports and air and seaports. On the other hand, he said the MMDA is still looking for a system and equipment that can be good for at least 20 years. “Bigyan nyo kami anim na buwan kasi may proseso. Iniisip ko riyan ang system na maikakabit, good for 20 years. Kung may bagong produktong lalabas, madaling mag-adjust,” he said. For now, Tolentino said they have PLDT’s assurance that it will “wait” for the MMDA to convert its traffic light system to a digital one. — KBK, GMA News
