The games began last weekend in Union City and Sacramento. The PBA is the Philippine counterpart of the NBA in America. The PBA Legends USA Foundation will organize, market and manage the games. The Philippine-based superstar athletes, the equivalent of the Magic Johnsons and Larry Birds of the NBA, are flying from Manila for the series. Some of the athletes participating in the games are Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio, Ramon Fernandez, Philip Cesar, Samboy Lim, Jojo Lastimosa, Manny Victorino, Vergel Meneses, Hector Calma, Dindo Pumaren, Jerry Codinera, Gerry Esplana, Olsen Racela, Bong Ravena, Johnny Abarrientos, Sonny Cabatu, and Dwight Lago, including the top two Filipino basketball coaches, Baby Dalupan and Dante Silverio. Robert Jaworski might also join the group. Former PBA athletes who reside in America, and active members of the Foundation, will join their Philippine-based colleagues in the sports festival. The players are Abe King, Yoyoy Villamin, Rino Salazar, Bernie Fabiosa, Marte Saldana, Noni Robles, Ricky Brown, Yves Dignadice, Onchie dela Cruz, Peter Aguilar, Jango Rivera, Jerome Cueto, Chris Bade and many others. The 2008 Basketball Series will provide entertainment and quality time (reminiscences and love for mother country) to Filipino Americans and guests who are nostalgic for their sports heroes; and to raise funds for the Foundation. The funds will, in turn, support the charitable and educational projects of the Foundation in the Philippines and the United States. Such projects include scholarship grants to needy and deserving students in the high school and college levels; medical and dental missions for the poorest of the poor, involving volunteer Filam and Filipino doctors; collaboration with other charitable organizations; basketball clinics; and other philanthropies, including assistance to former athletes in dire straits.
