DepEd to conduct ‘Brigada Eskwela’ in Marawi from December 13 to 15

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said that the clearing up and rebuilding of schools in the embattled city of Marawi will kick off on December 13 and will run for two days until 15, as part of the agency's program "Brigada Eskwela."

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, who will lead the Brigada Eskwela in Marawi, made the announcement during her keynote speech at the 2017 Philippine Education Summit.

Briones said that 22 schools in Marawi City were destroyed during the five-month long urban warfare, while 40 others are in need of major repair.

President Rodrigo Duterte declared the liberation of Marawi last October 17, a day after the killing of terror group leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute.

As of October 17, a total of 847 Maute members, 163 government troops, and 47 civilians have been killed. A total of 1,770 civilians have been rescued while 846 firearms have been recovered. — MDM, GMA News
