ISSUES
  • 'Winnability' in the Senate. Forner Senator Gringo Honasan filed his candidacy for senator on February 7, 2007. He ranked 12th in PulseAsia's Janauary 2007 nationwide survey on Filipinos' senatorial preferences--92% of the respondents know him, and 23.3% will vote for him.
  • Charged with rebellion. On February 27, 2006, the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) filed before the Department of Justice rebellion charges against Honasan and other political and military personalities including Communist Party founder Jose Ma. Sison, party-list Representatives Satur Ocampo, Crispin Beltran, Rafael Mariano, Teodoro Casiño, Liza Maza, and Joel Virador.
  • Alleged Mastermind of the Oakwood mutiny. When the Magdalo soldiers occupied Oakwood hotel in Makati, they endorsed Honasan's National Recovery Program. According to the report of the Feliciano Commission that investigated the Oakwood mutiny, Honasan allegedly presided over a bloodletting ritual between the rebel soldiers that took place on June 4, 2003 in a house in San Juan. On August 4, 2003, then Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose Lina filed with the Department of Justice (DOJ) a coup d' etat charge prepared by the PNP-CIDG against Honasan and 1000 others. Lina claimed Honasan masterminded the Oakwood mutiny.
    On February 24, 2006, the DOJ filed a coup d'etat case against Honasan and six other people at the Makati City regional trial court.
  • Involvement in the May 1, 2001 siege. Honasan was one of the alleged brains of the failed May 1, 2001 power grab and siege after Estrada's arrest. After her declaration of the state of rebellion, Arroyo ordered the warrantless arrest of several personalities including Honasan.
  • Pro-Estrada Senator. He was one of the 11 senators who objected to the opening of the "second envelope" during the aborted impeachment trial of Joseph Estrada.
  • Peace talks with the Ramos government. On October 13, 1995, the government under Fidel Ramos signed a General Agreement for Peace with Honasan's Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabansa-Soldiers of the Filipino People-Young Officers' Union (RAM-SFP-YOU).
  • Post-EDSA 1 Coup leader. One of the leaders of coup attempts during the Aquino administration
