OVERCOMING THE ODDS

Wendell Corregidor was just a year old when he was diagnosed with polio. Despite being unable to move the lower part of his body, Wendell learned how to be a fighter.

Eventually he became a paralympic swimmer, bringing home gold medals from various national competitions for persons with disabilities.

When typhoon Yolanda struck the coastal village of Baras in Palo town, Wendell saved more than ten people from drowning, including six children.

Shortly after, Wendell was recruited by a nongovernment organization to be its facilitator for kids.

He never imagined that he would serve as a guide for the young. He believes his story is proof that even during tragedies, persons with disabilities like him can still make a difference.

In this town where over 900 people perished, Wendell - with his selflessness, resilience and courage - has become a beacon of strength.
