Petro Gazz shocks Creamline in four-set semis romp

Petro Gazz was off to a hot start in the PVL All-Filipino Conference semifinals, stunning defending champion Creamline in four sets, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 on Saturday at the Ynares Center Antipolo.

The Angels lost steam in third set, but found the finishing touches to complete the upset win over the Cool Smashers and go 1-0 in the single round robin. They are now tied with Akari in the semis after the Chargers beat Choco Mucho earlier today.

After dropping a close third set, the Angels took care of business in the fourth frame with Brooke Van Sickle serving up an ace that made it a 15-9 lead.

MJ Phillips then denied Tots Carlos for a 17-10 cushion before her own quick hammer sent the Angels to an 18-13 advantage.

Creamline tried to come back behind Michele Gumabao, whose open kill cut the deficit to four, 15-19.

But Petro Gazz didn’t run out of fuel this time, unleashing a telling 5-0 rampage capped by a service ace from Phillips as they zoomed to a 24-15 upper hand.

Bea de Leon’s quick attack gave Creamline some glimmer of hope, but an unlucky service error from her as well awarded the victory to the Angels.

Van Sickle led the show for Petro Gazz with 26 points anchored on 22 attacks, three aces, and one block together with six receptions while Jonah Sabete provided the support with 19 markers.

Bernadeth Pons and Carlos paced Creamline with 14 and 13 points apiece.
