Angel Canino drops 27 points as La Salle deals UST's third straight loss

Angel Canino dropped a season-high 27 points to tow De La Salle University past University of Santo Tomas, 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 16-14, in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The deciding set was a tough affair as the two teams were tied 12-12. Reg Jurado's block put the Golden Tigresses in front, 13-12, as La Salle called for time. Shevana Laput's attack and block put the Lady Spikers at match point but Jurado salvaged one for the España-based squad. Laput went all in at clutch time while Amie Provido's block sealed the victory for La Salle.
Canino, who had a collision with Laput in the fourth set, was immediately brought out of the venue after the game was decided.
The La Salle team captain's season-high performance was anchored on 24 attacks to go with 13 excellent digs as the Taft-based squad improved to 6-3 for joint second with Far Eastern University. Laput added 16 points, while Provido added 12 points.
Jurado's 22-point outing went for naught as UST absorbed its third straight loss following back-to-back losses from National University and Far Eastern University. UST slipped to 5-4.
Earlier, Ateneo de Manila University (4-5) swept Adamson University (3-6), 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, with AC Miner and Lyann de Guzman leading the Blue Eagles with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Shaina Nitura had 21 points in the Lady Falcons' losing effort.
The Ateneo men's team (6-3), meanwhile, also notched a victory against the Soaring Falcons (2-7), 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17.
Earlier, UST (5-4) defeated La Salle (5-4) in men's play, 25-22, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22.
