UST outlasts La Salle in five-set thriller; Adamson sweeps UE in UAAP women's volleyball


The University of Santo Tomas outlasted De La Salle University in a five-set thriller, 25-12, 22-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The match was tied in the fifth set, 11-all, before errors marred the final stretch of the game. An Angel Canino attack went wide open to give the Golden Tigresses a crucial advantage, before Marga Altea gave UST a two-point lead. Shevana Laput then gave another chance for the Lady Spikers, but Reg Jurado found an opening to put UST at match point. Bianca Plaza's service error delayed the win before a double contact violation was called on La Salle to seal the win.

Angge Poyos led the Golden Tigresses with 28 points anchored on 24 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, while Jurado added 17 points as UST improved to 2-1.

Canino led the Taft-based squad with 25 points from 21 attacks and three aces, while Laput added 18 points as La Salle slipped to 1-2.

Earlier, Adamson University made quick work of University of the East to return to the win column, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12.

Rookie Shaina Nitura had 18 points, while Frances Mordi added 11 points as the Lady Falcons improved to 2-1.

Nessa Bangayan and KC Cepada had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for UE which remained winless in three games.

In the men's division, Adamson (1-2) pulled off a 27-29, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17 victory against UE (0-3), while UST (2-1) also defeated La Salle (1-2), 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.
