Ateneo sweeps UP for first win in UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball

Ateneo de Manila notched its first win in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament at the expense of the University of the Philippines, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Blue Eagles had an early 18-9 lead in the third set before UP scored three straight to stop the bleeding. However, Sobe Buena led the late rally for the blue-and-white squad and put Ateneo at 23-17, which was followed by an AC Miner block to hand them the match point. Niña Ytang salvaged a match point, but it was Buena who finished the match for the Blue Eagles.

Buena led the Eagles' flight with 17 points anchored on 15 attacks and a block, while captain Lyann de Guzman had 14 points as Ateneo improved to 1-2.

Irah Jaboneta, meanwhile, was the only double-digit scorer for UP with 11 points.
