Arellano's Pecaña, Paralejas, Batindaan, Perpetual's Aldea selected in PVL Draft

NCAA players in 2024 PVL Draft

Four products of the National Collegiate Athletic Association were selected in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft on Monday.

Arellano University's Lorraine Pecaña was selected 11th overall by Choco Mucho in the first round, while Razel Aldea of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA was selected 17th overall by Nxled in the second round. Pecaña's fellow Lady Chiefs Donnalyn Paralejas (18th) and Dodee Batindaan (21st) were also picked by Petro Gazz and Galeries, respectively.

Pecaña, Paralejas, and Batindaan were part of the Lady Chiefs squad which made a Final Four finish in Season 99. However, Arellano lost to Lyceum of the Philippines University in the stepladder.

The three also played roles in the Arellano squad which appeared in the finals in Season 97.

The Arellano ladies, however, were not expecting anything in the stacked pool.

"Sabi namin, pumunta lang kami. Pray lang, ipagpasa-Diyos na lang namin kung anong mangyayari rito and will naman ni God kung ibibigay nila 'yun sa amin," Paralejas shared.

[We said, let's just go. We'll pray and leave it to God whatever happens here and it's be God's will if it will be given to us.]

Aside from the three, other players from Arellano who submitted their names were Robbie Matawaran and Charm Diño.

"Sabi namin po, walang expectations sa aming lahat na magkakasama na lima. Mapili man tayo, pumunta lang tayo. Wala namang teams na makakapag-promise kasi drafting. Um-attend lang tayo, magpakita lang tayo malay natin may makapili. 'Yun lang mindset namin," Batindaan told GMA News Online.

[We said, we had no expectations, the five of us. Whether or not we're selected, let's just go. There are no teams that can make promises because it's drafting. Let's just attend, let's show up and who knows, some may be picked. That was our mindset.]

True enough, these NCAA players were picked in a stacked pool dominated by many top volleyball stars in the country.

"Dito po, mapapatunayan din natin na ang NCAA, marami kaming mapapatunayan. Hindi kami basta NCAA. Maraming coaches na nagpalakas sa amin na magbibigay ng oportunidad sa amin para maka-enter sa PVL na ito," Aldea said.

[Here, we can prove something for the NCAA, there's a lot we can prove. We're not just NCAA. There were a lot of coaches that trained us and gave us the opportunity to enter the PVL.]

Pecaña, meanwhile, said there are many deserving players from the country's first collegiate league.

"Marami pong deserving na NCAA players na makasali sa pro, pero laking gulat ko po na ako 'yung first na napili. Malaking team pa, Choco Mucho pa nakapili sa akin so 'yung pressure nandoon, 'yung happiness din po nandoon," Pecaña told select reporters.

[There are a lot of NCAA players who deserve to go pro, but I was surprised that I became the first one selected. It's a big team, too, Choco Mucho is the one that picked me so there's pressure there, there's also happiness there.]

Paralejas also echoed her former teammate's statement.

"Masaya po kasi napapakita naming mga nasa NCAA na kaya namin makipagsabayan sa kahit anong larangan ng liga na kaya rin namin," she added.

[I'm happy because we NCAA players are able to show we can keep up in any aspect of the league, we can do it.]

"Doon sa napili na from NCAA or outside UAAP and NCAA, I'm very proud to all of us and looking forward na mas maiangat pa natin ang bandera ng NCAA," added Aldea.

[To those chosen from NCAA or outside UAAP and NCAA, I'm very proud to all of us and looking forward to raise the NCAA flag even higher.]
