PNVF tasks PVL to form women's national team

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), the country's recognized body for the sport, has granted the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) the responsibility to form the women's national team for future international competitions.

The PNVF decided on the move last April 12 during a board's meeting at Seda Nuvali during the FIVB Beach Pro Tour in Santa Rosa City.

The development came ahead of the country's hosting of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup for Women from May 22 to 29, where the PVL-formed squad will first test its mettle.

“This is a landmark decision by the PNVF board and we are looking forward to the PVL forming the strongest women’s national team ever,” said PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara.

PNVF added that Brazilian tactician Jorge Edson de Brito, the FIVB-assigned coach for the Philippines, will handle the women’s national team.

AVC Challenge Cup for Women features 10 teams including the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Iran, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, and India.

The development also came just weeks after the announcement of FIVB that the country won the hosting bid for the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship, where Sergio Veloso will handle the men's crew.
