Petro Gazz blanks Cignal to clinch PNVF Champions League title

Petro Gazz pulled off a sweep against erstwhile undefeated Cignal, 25-19, 27-25, 25-22, to reign supreme in the 2024 Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Champions League on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Angels, though, had to weather a third set rally from the HD Spikers after a series of comeback attempts led by Glaudine Troncoso, who powered back-to-back attacks to cut the deficit to one, 19-20.

However, Sabete had a huge answer, soaring for two consecutive kills that proved crucial as it sent Petro Gazz to a 22-19 cushion before middle blocker Remy Palma swiped the ball off the hands of Roselyn Doria, 23-20.

Troncoso then committed a costly attack error when her back row hammer didn't make it across the other side, giving Petro Gazz the championship point at 24-21.

Palma's own attack error saved one for Cignal, but Filipino-American Brooke Van Sickle put the seal on the deal when she went through the block of Doria for the game-winning point.

Petro Gazz  took home the crown against Cignal, a team that was undefeated prior to the battle for gold after having swept the elimination round with a 4-0 card en route to a five-set escape of Benilde in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Chery Tiggo made quick work of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde with a sweep win, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13, to salvage a third place finish.

The Crossovers banked on the brilliance of their veterans with lefty opposite hitter Mylene Paat churning out 11 points built on eight attacks and three blocks while new recruits Aby Maraño and Ara Galang scattered 10 markers apiece.

The youthful Lady Blazers, meanwhile, were led by Gayle Pascual and team captain Jessa Dorog with the former tallying seven while the latter chipped in six.
