La Salle's Angel Canino, UST's Josh Ybañez are UAAP Season 85 Rookie MVPs


De La Salle University's Angel Canino and University of Santo Tomas' Josh Ybañez were named Rookies of the Year and Most Valuable Player of UAAP Season 85 volleyball tournaments.

Canino accumulated 89.375 statistical points (SPs) to claim the plum after ranking third in scoring with 227 points, fourth in spiking with a 36.42 percent efficiency, fourth in reception with a 40.85 percent rate, seventh in service with 0.27 ace per set, and ninth in blocking with 0.44 kill blocks per frame.

Meanwhile, Ybañez had 96.00 statistical points (SP) after ranking second in scoring with 292 points, first in spiking with a high success rate of 45.74 percent, first in service with 0.36 aces per set, and second in reception with an efficiency rate of 56.99 percent.

Aside from being MVP, Canino also received the 2nd Best Outside Spiker award. Her teammates Jolina Dela Cruz, Thea Gagate, and Mars Alba were named as 1st Best Outside Spiker, 1st Best Middle Blocker, and Best Setter, respectively. Far Eastern University's Jovelyn Fernandez was named Best Opposite Spiker, while University of Santo Tomas' Bernadett Peptio was the Best Libero. University of the Philippines' Nina Ytang was named 2nd Best Middle Blocker.

Canino is the first La Salle MVP since Majoy Baron in 2017 and the league's second rookie MVP.

In the men's side, Ybañez was also named as 1st Best Outside Spiker, while Michaelo Buddin was named 2nd Best Outside Spiker. National University's Obed Mukaba was awarded 1st Best Middle Blocker while La Salle's Billie Anima was 2nd Best Middle Blocker. UST's Jack Ray dela Noche was Best Opposite Spiker, while Lance de Castro of Ateneo de Manila and Joshua Retamar of NU were Best Libero and Best Setter, respectively.

Ybañez is the first rookie MVP since Marck Espejo in Season 77 and the first from UST since Mark Alfafara since Season 75.
