Philippine team dealt another heartbreaker, falls to China in AVC Cup for Women

Another day, another gallant stand from the Philippines.

The national women’s volleyball team put up a mighty fight against a taller China side but still fell short, absorbing a 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 loss in the AVC Cup for Women on Tuesday.

The Filipinas matched the visitors’ energy early in the opening frame with Tots Carlos keeping the hosts within four, 19-15. But a 6-1 closing run by China handed it the set by nine-point margin, 25-16.

Carlos again piloted the offense for the Filipinas come second set before Jema Galanza’s ace tied things up at 18 as the Philippines continued to threaten China.

Another ace from Michele Gumabao put both team at 22-all scorecard before three straight points from China served as the finishing kick.

The Creamline-bannered squad continued its gallant play in the third, even leading China, 18-15, after a Carlos attack. But China proved to be too much for the Philippines as they cruised to the sweep.

Wu Mengjie poured 24 points built on 23 attacks while Zhuang Yushan registered 10 markers, including crucial points in the latter part as China remained undefeated in Group A with a perfect 3-0 card.

The loss sank Philippines to 0-2 slate in Group A following an opening day defeat to Vietnam last Sunday.

Carlos dropped 15 points in the loss while Galanza and Gumabao each chipped in 11 markers as the Philippines welcomed back veteran setter Jia Morado, who was placed under health protocols in the previous match.

The nationals will try to bag their maiden win on Wednesday against Iran at 7 p.m.
