Sue Roces announces retirement; PVL honors veteran player's career

Volleyball veteran Sue Roces has called it a career.

According to an update on the Premier Volleyball League's website on Tuesday, Roces made the announcement of her decision to retire on Abante Tonite's show Sportalakan, hosted by her partner Sarah Asido.

"First time ko ia-announce na ngayong 2022 para sa mga naging fans ko, lahat ng coaches at teammates ko, at fans ng Perlas, I've decided to retire," Roces said. "Happy naman na ako. Pinagisipan ko na 'yun last year pa bago mag-end 'yung taon. So decided na ako mag-retire sa paglalaro."

(It's my first time to announce to all my fans, teammates, and coaches that for this year, I've decided to retire. I am happy. I thought about it last year before it ended. I've decided.)

The 37-year old Roces has been in the volleyball scene for almost two decades.

Roces, a product of the University of the East, was Rookie of the Year back in UAAP Season 65.

The former Rookie of the Year became a guest player for teams such as Adamson University, University of Santo Tomas, San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R), Ateneo de Manila University, and the Philippine Navy.

Back in 2010, Roces won the Shakey's V League Most Valuable Player award with the SSC-R squad.

The veteran player last played with the Perlas Spikers back in 2021.

The PVL said they are grateful to have a player like Roces.

"Though it is sad to see her retire, we would also like to celebrate her career. We are thankful to have helped in developing her and it was an honor seeing her grow, not just as a player, but as a person," PVL President Ricky Palou said in a statement.
