Go for Gold edges Global Remit, moves on cusp of PNVF Champions League title

The Go for Gold-Air Force Aguilas are now one win away from the gold.

This after the Aguilas recovered from one set down against Global Remit to hack out a 26-28, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 victory in their semifinals match in the 2021 PNVF Champions League on Friday in Lipa City, Batangas.

It was a total team effort for Go for Gold with national team captain John Vic De Guzman leading the way with his 16 points. The former NCAA standout got solid support from Lloyd Josafat, who produced 15 markers.

Kim Malabunga and Reuben Inaudito, meanwhile, each listed 10 points in the win.

After dropping the opening set, Go for Gold got its act together in the second set as a hammer from the opposite side by Francis Saura tied the match to one set apiece, 25-22.

De Guzman, together with another national team mainstay Mark Alfafara, took care of business in the third set to help the Aguilas move one set away from the victory.

There was no stopping the Dante Alinsunurin-mentored squad in the fourth set, doubling up on Global Remit after an open hit from De Guzman, 10-5. Saura then drilled back-to-back points for a 22-17 cushion before De Guzman gave them the first match point, 24-19.

Josafat then sealed the deal with a service ace.

The Aguilas will face the winner of the other semis match between the Team Dasma Monarchs and VNS Manileño Spikers later today while the loser faces Global Remit for the battle for bronze.

The championship round is slated for Saturday at 4 p.m.
