Injured Maddie Madayag grateful for PVL season, but rues rushed schedule: ‘The body can only handle so much’
Choco Mucho team captain Maddie Madayag, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference, shared her thoughts on Saturday about the grueling competition schedule they had to endure competing during the pandemic.
Madayag, in an Instagram post, said that while she understood the circumstances that led to the schedule, which saw her team play in as many as seven consecutive days, she believes it was not an ideal situation for athletes to put their bodies through.
“I understand that this conference was truly difficult to organize and fully plan out given the current situation of our country and I am grateful for those who made the effort so that the games pushed through,” she wrote in the post.
“Coming into the bubble, I believe the teams were put in an environment that was not conducive for any athlete, no matter how strong. 7-8 straight games of nonstop competing at a high level can definitely take a toll on one’s body. No athlete deserves to be put into the risk of injuries when there are other options to carry on strategizing which will benefit all and lessen the risk.”
Madayag was forced to exit the first game of the Flying Titans’ battle for third place series against the Petro Gazz Angels last Wednesday. After suffering a bad landing, she was escorted off the floor in a wheelchair. On Friday, the team confirmed that it was an injury to her left ACL.
This will be the second ACL injury that Madayag has had to overcome in her career. She had previously missed a year of action for the Ateneo Lady Eagles in the UAAP with an injury to her right ACL back in 2016.
In her post, she detailed the offseason work they had put in specifically to try to avoid injury.
“However, the body – no matter how healthy or strong – can only handle so much. It is unfortunate that despite the intensive strengthening and training done prior to the league had to be negated all because of a rushed schedule,” she said.
She also said the conference taught her a lot about the importance of health, rest, and recovery, and she remains upbeat about the team’s accomplishments this conference and outlook moving forward.
