Ateneo, UP split victories in UAAP volleyball

Ateneo de Manila University posted contrasting finishes against the University of the Philippines in the UAAP men's and women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Eagles began their title retention bid in dominant fashion, sweeping an error-plagued Lady Fighting Maroons, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23.

UP committed 29 errors compared to Ateneo's 17.

Ateneo finished the game after UP setter Ren Cailing committed a service error in the third canto, 25-23.

The returning Kat Tolentino led the way for Ateneo with 15 markers, while rookie sensation Faith Nisperos and Jules Samonte added 10 points apiece.

UP's Tots Carlos had 11 points, while Isa Molde scored nine markers.

In the men's division, the Fighting Maroons scored an upset against the Blue Eagles, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22, to grab their first win of the season.

John Christopher Lomibao led UP with 11 points, while rookie Louis Gamban added 10 markers.

Chumason Njigha spearheaded Ateneo with 12 markers, while Gian Glorioso scored 11 points. —MGP, GMA News
