La Salle survives Ateneo to take finals opener
The De La Salle Lady Spikers survived a determined Ateneo squad to take Game 1 of the UAAP Women's Volleyball finals, 21-25 29-27 25-22 25-20, on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
It is the first time that the Lady Spikers earned a win over the Lady Eagles this season, as Ateneo took the two elimination games.
Kim Dy delivered the winning hit, as La Salle built a large enough lead in the end game to come away with the victory.
It was a balanced attack for the defending champions, with four players scoring in double figures. Tin Tiamzon had 15 points all off attacks, while Kim Dy added 14 markers. Kim Fajardo and Desiree Cheng also had 10 points each.
Jho Maraguinot paced the Lady Eagles with 16 points off 14 kills, while Bea De Leon was solid for 14 markers. Michelle Morente, meanwhile, added 11 points.
La Salle led Ateneo 51-38 in attack points, but the Lady Eagles slightly edged the Taft-based squad in block, 6-4. The two teams also dealt a lot of aces, with the Lady Spikers barely winning the service game, 11-10. —JST, GMA News
