Who is Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen? Alex Eala's Round of 32 foe at Mubadala DC Open

Alex Eala officially plunges back into action after a three-week break, and a daunting test is already awaiting her.

The 21-year-old Filipina will face China's Zheng Qinwen in the Round of 32 of the Mubadala DC Open on early Wednesday to officially mark her North American swing campaign.

The formidable Zheng etched her name in the history books when she dominated the Paris Olympics women's singles competition in 2024.

Zheng swept Donna Vekic of Croatia in the finals to capture the gold medal. Qinwen, though, underwent surgery on her right elbow in July 2025, forcing her to miss several months of action and slip in the world rankings as she's now sitting at No. 123 in the WTA rankings.

Before that surgery, Zheng reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in June 2025.

She's now ready to regain her footing, advancing to the Bad Homburg Open Round of 16, absorbing a first-round exit at Wimbledon, and reaching the quarterfinals of the WTA250 Athens Open.

Zheng isn't a new foe to the Philippine bet.

The 23-year-old was the same opponent that ended Eala's Asian Games dream three years ago, pulling off a grueling 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-3 over the Pinay ace during their semifinals bout before beating her compatriot Zhu Lin in the finals to win the gold medal.

But at the Mubadala DC Open, the two Asian players will mark the first time they will face off in the WTA Tour.

Eala, who recently climbed to career-high world No. 28, is coming off a historic run at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships, where she became the first-ever Filipina to reach the fourth round, but eventually lost to Italian pride Jasmine Paolini in three sets to bow out of contention.

The winner of this match will take on seventh-seeded and defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16.

The DC Open will run from July 27 to August 2.
