Alex Eala 'on cloud nine' after upset win vs Iga Swiatek in Miami Open
Alex Eala herself was surprised after pulling off one of the biggest upset victories of her career as she defeated world no. 2 Iga Swiatek, 6-2, 7-5, on early Thursday (Philippine time) in the Miami Open.
After sealing the victory, the 19-year old Filipina was just shocked as she stunned Swiatek.
"I'm in complete disbelief right now. I'm on cloud nine," the WTA no. 140 Eala said in an interview after the match.
Eala and Swiatek previously crossed paths in the Rafa Nadal Academy where the latter was a guest during the former's graduation in 2023.
"It's so surreal because I feel like I'm the exact person that I was in that photo but of course, circumstances have changed and I'm just so happy and blessed to be able to compete with such a player on this stage," she said.
Eala added also took every opportunity available in the said match.
"My coach told me to run, to go for every ball, take all the opportunities I can because [a] 5-time Grand Slam champion is not gonna give you the win," she added.
As she continues her dream run, Eala said the Miami Open will "forever be in my heart."
The Filipina tennis ace, who will advance to the semis, now awaits the winner of the quarterfinals match between Emma Raducanu and Jessica Pegula.
