EJ Obiena places second in Germany meet to open indoor pole vault season

EJ Obiena opened his indoor pole vault season Wednesday by placing second in the International Jump Meeting Cottbus at the Lausitz-Arena in Germany.
Obiena took the second spot with a 5.65 clearance behind Sam Kendricks of the United States who topped the meet.
The Filipino pole vaulter cleared the 5.40, 5.55, and 5.65 bars with just one attempt each before skipping 5.70. He then tried to clear 5.75 meters but failed in three attempts.
Bo Kanda Lita Baehre of Germany placed third as he also cleared 5.65 meters once but he needed two attempts to finish 5.55 meters. Belgium's Ben Broeders, who placed fourth, also finished at 5.65 but had two attempts in the said clearance.
This is Obiena's first competition since prematurely canceling his 2024 season due to a back injury.
