Carlos Yulo named 2024 PSA Athlete of the Year

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo has been named as the 2024 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association for his gold medal performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Yulo became the overwhelming choice for the said recognition for bringing home two gold medals for the Philippines as he ruled the floor exercise and vault apparatus events in gymnastics.

He became the second Olympic gold medalist from the Philippines, following the footsteps of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who won in the 2021 edition of the Summer Games in Tokyo, where Yulo fell short in the vault finals.

In 2024, Yulo also won gold medals for the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars events of the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The gymnast from Manila also became the first gymnast to be given the Athlete of the Year recognition following Pia Adelle Reyes in 1997.

Yulo will be recognized with the feat on January 27 at the PSA's annual awards night. Aside from Athlete of the Year, the PSA will also hand out awards such as the NSA of the Year, Major Awardees in other sports, President’s Award, Executive of the Year, citations, Tony Siddayao Awards, and Hall of Fame and Special Recognition to Filipino athletes and para athletes who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics.
