Jon Jones stops aging Miocic to retain world title at UFC 309
Two-division champion Jon Jones made a successful defense of the UFC heavyweight world title following a third-round technical knockout over Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 309 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Jones unleashed the opening salvo with a straight left hand on top which the 42-year-old Miocic countered with his right. Jones took Miocic down more than a minute into the fight where he unleashed big elbows that opened a cut on the latter
Miocic was from thereon, seemingly on the guard for another takedown attempt from Jones. In the third round, Jones stunned Miocic with a clean right hand then later on unleashed a spinning back kick to the body that reduced him to a knee.
Jones followed up with punches against the defenseless Miocic, earning him a stoppage at the 4:29 mark of the stanza. The win improved Jones’ record to 28-1 while Miocic dropped to 20-5 and announced his retirement after the fight.
