Fil-Am kickboxer Jackie Buntan wins ONE world title
Filipina-American striker Jackie Buntan won the inaugural ONE women's strawweight kickboxing world title following a unanimous decision nod over Anissa Meksen at ONE 169 on Saturday at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Buntan, 27, banked on her boxing and leg kicks throughout the contest to outland her foe. Meksen was game and came forward landing shots of her own, but it was Buntan's glaring shots that caught the judges' attention en route to a victory on the scorecards.
"I have been confident this whole camp. I knew it was mine I just had to solidify it. I just can't believe it right now," Buntan said after the fight.
"I took the first round to feel her power and speed. It was not much of a threat to me, to be honest. I just kept building from round one and took my time with it."
The win will be Buntan's first time to hold a world title, having lost in her first attempt against Smilla Sundell two years ago.
