Carlos Yulo shares lesson from Japan training he wants to give to future gymnasts

Japan has been Carlos Yulo's second home.

The Olympic gold medalist trained in Teikyo University from 2016 under coach Munehiro Kugimiya until the two parted ways in 2023.

However, apart from gymnastics skills, Yulo said he has also learned the value of dedication and hard work from Kugimiya.

"Siguro po 'yung dedication po sa work and try nang try talaga. Huwag sumuko sa gustong abutin sa buhay," Yulo said on Tuesday when asked about a lesson he wanted to pass on to other gymnasts.

"'Pag tiyanaga mo, binigyan mo ng oras, binigyan mo ng dedication mo, binigay mo ang puso mo, kahit hindi mo maabot ang pangarap mo sa buhay, may mas maaabot kang mas mataas which is makikilala mo ang sarili mo sa journey, mas pahalagahan 'yung pag-training and mga nakakasalamuha mo na tao and mga taong tumutulong sa atin para maabot 'yung pangarap na 'yun. Siguro 'yun po ang isang gusto kong ituro or i-share na experience ko kay Coach Munehiro," Yulo said.

The Filipino gymnast on Tuesday was recognized by the Japan Embassy for his achievements in the 2024 Paris Olympics where he won two gold medals.

Yulo received an award from Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya for his contribution to sports and Japan-Philippines relations.

"Japan is deeply, deeply honored to have helped shape him into the best version of himself and into one of the finest athletes the sport has seen," the ambassador said.

According to Yulo, he is set to travel to Japan soon to visit his university and personally thank those who helped him in his journey.
