EJ Obiena finishes 5th, Mondo Duplantis sets new world record in Diamond League Silesia leg

Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena missed out on the podium in his second tournament following the Paris Olympics as he ended up fifth in the Silesia leg of the Wanda Diamond League on early Monday.

The 28-year-old ace, who was coming off a third place finish in the Lausanne leg last Thursday, easily cleared his first attempts at both 5.62 and 5.82 meters, but dropped out of medal contention after absorbing three failed clearances in the next height at 5.92 meters.

Reigning two-time Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis of Sweden did his usual stuff, setting a new world record of 6.26 meters to break the previous 6.25m mark he set during his gold medal run in Paris just weeks ago.

Before that clearance, the 24-year-old Duplantis breezed past 5.62m, 5.92m, and 6.00m with just one attempt in each bar. At 6.26m, Duplantis needed two jumps to shatter the world record anew.

Paris Olympics silver and bronze medalists Sam Kendricks and Emmanouil Karalis came up second and third again this time with both athletes clearing 6.00m.
