EJ Obiena finishes third in Swiss meet, tied with two other pole vaulters
Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena finished third, tied with two other pole vaulters, in the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League on early Thursday (Philippine time).
Obiena cleared 5.82 meters in just a single attempt to place third, tied with Norway's Sondre Guttormsen and Australia's Kurtis Marschall, in the tourney which had 11 competitors.
All three of them cleared the said bar in just a single attempt and had no failed tries in their previous clearances.
The Filipino pole vaulter first cleared 5.62, skipped 5.72, then did it again at 5.82. He tried to clear 5.92 but failed in all three attempts.
World no. 1 and Paris Olympics gold medalist Mondo Duplantis of Sweden ruled the tournament as he set a new meet record at 6.15 meters. He held the previous record at 6.10 meters two years ago.
Paris silver medalist and American Sam Kendricks placed second with 5.92 meters.
This is Obiena's first competition after the Paris Olympics where he finished fourth. He is also expected to compete in the Silesia leg on August 25.
