Elreen Ando records personal bests, finishes 6th in Olympic weightlifting
In her return to the Olympic stage, Elreen Ando recorded personal bests but still finished outside of the podium in the women's weightlifting 59kg event of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Ando registered a total of 230kg, with 100kg from the snatch and 130kg from the clean and jerk, both personal bests, to finish in sixth place.
It took Ando two attempts before successfully lifting 100kg in the snatch, then failed in her third attempt at 102 kg. This matched her personal best with the 100kg lift.
In the clean and jerk, Ando needed three attempts to successfully lift 130kg which is her new personal mark.
However, the total lift was not enough to make it to the top three.
China's Luo Shifang reset the Olympic record for snatch at 107kg, just minutes after Canada's Maude Charron, gold medalist in the 64kg event in Tokyo, eclipsed her previous record to improve to 106kg.
Ando was the higher-ranked weightlifter when she competed with Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz in the 2024 IWF World Cup last April.
Back in Tokyo, Ando finished seventh with 222kg at the 64kg event.
The Philippines currently has two gold medals from Carlos Yulo in gymnastics and two bronze medals from boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio.
