Marcos congratulates Carlos Yulo for winning Olympic gold
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos congratulated gymnast Carlos Yulo for winning the Philippines' first Olympic gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo won the gold for floor exercise in Olympic gymnastics, making him the second Olympic gold medalist after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz back in Tokyo three years ago.
In a Facebook post, Marcos said the country is proud of Yulo's achievement.
"Congratulations, Caloy! The entire country stands proud with you," the caption of the post read.
Marcos also said he is confident about the country's medal chances in the Summer Games.
"We’ve witnessed history as Carlos Yulo clinched the Philippines’ first gold medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics," the caption said. "I am confident that it will not be the last."
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos also congratulated Yulo.
"Congratulations Carlos Yulo [clapping hands emoji]. You gave us the first GOLD MEDAL at the Paris Olympics 2024! Woo hoo!! Got goosebumps as Lupang Hinirang played at the arena! We are so proud of you!," she wrote in a post on Facebook.
Yulo will have a chance for another medal when he competes in the vault finals on Sunday.
As gold medalist, however, Yulo already stands to receive a number of cash incentives and rewards, such as P10 million from the government as mandated by law, P3 million from the House of Representatives, an Olympic Gold Medal of Valor from the Philippine Sports Commission, and a house and lot from the Philippine Olympic Committee, among others.
Aside from Yulo, boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio are still on the running for a possible medal, while pole vaulter EJ Obiena qualified for the men's pole vault finals.
Hurdlers John Cabang Tolentino and Lauren Hoffman, golfers Dottie Ardina and Bianca Pagdanganan, and weightlifters John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno, and Elreen Ando have yet to commence their respective campaigns in the Summer Games. —JKC/KG, GMA Integrated News
