Carlos Yulo shoots for all-around gold as boxers Hergie Bacyadan, Carlo Paalam make Paris debuts

Carlos Yulo will attempt to deliver the country's first podium finish in the 2024 Paris Olympics when he plunges in the men's artistic gymnastics all-around final on late Wednesday.

Set at 11:30 p.m. (Philippine time) at the Bercy Arena, the 24-year-old Filipino gymnast will enter the competition as the ninth seed in the said event after collecting a total of 83.631 points during the qualification round.

Asian Games gold medalist Boheng Zhang of China topped the preliminaries with 88.597 points while the Japanese tandem of Shinnosuke Oka and Daiki Hashimoto, the reigning Olympic all-around gold medalist, came in second and third with 86.865 and 85.064 points, respectively.

Before Yulo's medal round, Filipino boxers Hergie Bacyadan and Carlo Paalam will begin their respective campaigns.

Bacyadan, a debuting Olympian, will jumpstart her bid against top seed Li Qian of China in the Round of 16 of the women's 75kg division at 6:04 p.m. at the North Paris Arena while Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Paalam will open his redemption tour against Jude Gallagher of Ireland in Round of 16 in men's 57kg class at 9:30 p.m.

Bacyadan and Paalam will look to build on the momentum from fellow boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas' triumphs in their own bids and to also get inspiration from Eumir Marcial, who absorbed a shock exit earlier today in the men's 80kg division.

To open the Philippines' campaign today, rower Joanie Delgaco will see action in the women's single sculls classification round in hopes to still end her campaign on a high note despite already bowing out of contention.

The 26-year-old rower will see action at 4:14 p.m. at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
