Joanie Delgaco's Olympic medal bid ends in quarterfinals

Joanie Delgaco saw a tough ending to her fairytale run as she finished last in the quarterfinals of the women's single sculls at the 2024 Paris Olympics to formally end her campaign on Tuesday at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

The 26-year-old history-making Filipina rower clocked seven minutes and 58.30 seconds to wind up sixth in the six-woman heat. Only the top three athletes in each heat will advance to the semifinals.

Reigning gold medalist Emma Tiwgg of New Zealand topped the heat with seven minutes and 26.89 seconds while Aurelia-Maxima Katharina Janzen of Switzerland came in second after finishing the race after seven minutes and 31.12 seconds.

Virginia Diaz Rivas of Spain, meanwhile, booked the last semis spot after clocking seven minutes and 34.01 seconds.

Along with Delgaco, Diana Dymchenko of Azerbaijan (7:53.76) and Jovana Arsic of Serbia (7:56.18) were also eliminated from medal contention after finishing fourth and fifth.

The Filipina rowing ace as she will still see action in the classification rounds to determine her final ranking in the Summer Games.
