EJ Obiena finishes 7th in Ostrava meet as pole breaks on match day
Paris-bound pole vaulter EJ Obiena finished seventh in the Ostrava Golden Spike in Czech Republic, clearing only his opening bar at 5.52 meters as his pole broke on the day of his match.
Obiena tried to clear the 5.72 and 5.82 marks but failed to do so.
On his social media, the Asian record holder shared the story of how his pole eventually reached Europe until match day, but was eventually broken.
"28th- Game day! Broke my pole and only made my opening bar," he wrote on the caption of his post.
"Frustrating to say the least and very pissed at the whole debacle. Taking what positive I can take on this whole situation and thankfully it seems like I am in one piece."
Armand Duplantis ruled the Ostrava meet as he cleared 6.00, while France's Ethan Cormont (5.62) finished second due to countback. Belgium's Ben Broeders and local bet David Holy also cleared 5.62, but placed third.
Despite the setback, Obiena said he will still compete in the Oslo Bislett Games on the 30th.
Obiena recently topped the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix.
