EJ Obiena's goal on Paris Olympics: 'I really just want that medal'
Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena only has one thing in mind as he prepares for the upcoming Paris Olympics: a medal for the Philippines.
World no. 2 Obiena fell short in his attempt to get a medal in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but now he is more experienced and more determined to make a podium finish.
Obiena said that he just wants to give his best as he aims for a medal, despite the rewards waiting for Olympic medalists.
Aside from a medal, athletics gold medalists in the Paris Games will also receive a cash prize of $50,000. For Filipino Olympians, individual gold medalists will also get P10 million, as mandated by Republic Act 10699. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino also said a house and lot will also be given to Filipino gold medalists.
"If I’m being honest that doesn’t make me feel different," Obiena said in JP Soriano's 24 Oras report on April 23 about the additional reward.
"I really just want that medal."
Prior to the Summer Games, the Asian pole vault record holder is expected to compete in seven more competitions to continue his buildup to the Olympics.
Obiena is also aware that world no. 1 Armand Duplantis is also aiming for his own medal, but the Filipino pole vaulter said he will still give his best.
"I trust that everyone is well prepared... But at the same time, I trust my abilities to perform under pressure, perform my best... I’m banking on that and I’m stepping on that field to fight for that win.”
Obiena is the first Filipino to qualify for the Paris Games. As of writing, more than ten Filipinos have qualified for the Paris Games.
