Pinoy speed skater Peter Groseclose arrives in Korea for Winter Youth Olympics
Filipino speed skater Peter Groseclose arrived in South Korea on Sunday ahead of his participation in the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics slated to kick off this Friday in Gangwon.
Groseclose is part of the three-person delegation sent by the country to the quadrennial event as freestyle skier Laetaz Amihan Rabe will arrive on Friday while cross-country skier Avery Balbanida will land on January 25.
The 16-year-old Groseclose is qualified to compete in the short track’s 500-, 1000- and 1,500-meter races which will be staged from January 20 to 24 while the 14-year-old Rabe is listed to see action in the slopestyle and big air events.
Balbanida, 16, will banner the Philippines in the 7.5-km classic skiing and sprint freestyle set from January 29 to February 1.
“It’s always exciting for the Philippines to be on any international stage and for us to have three athletes in the Winter Youth Olympic Games,” chef de mission Ada Milby, who heads the rugby federation, said.
“It demonstrates the commitment of the athletes to perform on that level.”
Aside from Milby, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino and secretary-general Wharton Chan as well as Philippine Skating Union president Nikki Cheng and Philippine Ski and Snowboard Federation secretary-general Jezreel Apelar are also set to fly to Gangwon on Thursday.
