Michael Martinez says coaching will be part of his legacy
What has Michael Martinez been up to these days?
Away from competing, the two-time Winter Olympian is now playing a part in shaping the future of Philippine figure skating as he coaches the next generation of skaters.
He is coaching in SM skating rinks at Megamall and Mall of Asia.
"It's pretty good. I've been coaching and doing my best to help the next generation so it's pretty exciting," Martinez said during the 'Carols on Ice' event at the SM Mall of Asia skating rink last November.
While coaching is not new for him as he tried his hand at it six years ago, Martinez said he became a full-time coach in the United States around two years ago and continued it when he decided to move back to the country.
For him, teaching aspiring skaters will be part of his legacy.
"I feel like I want to leave my legacy and seeing them improve because of me will give me a great feeling, to be honest."
At 27, is Martinez open to competing again?
"Wala akong pera," he said in jest.
Two years ago, Martinez attempted a comeback to the Olympics and had a fundraiser to support his training.
However, due to injuries, Martinez withdrew from his bid and it was Edrian Paul Celestino who represented the Philippines to the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy, the Olympic qualifier to the 2022 Winter Olympics.
"Competing-wise, I don't know. I've been doing shows and it made me want to go back. We'll never know, I don't want to say anything yet, so we'll see."
