Asian Games 2023 Philippines Meggie Ochoa

The Philippines won its second gold medal in the 19th Asian Games thanks to jiu-jitsu’s Meggie Ochoa.

Ochoa reigned supreme in the women’s 48kg division after defeating United Arab Emirates' Balqees Abdulla in the finals on Thursday.

Prior to this, Ochoa defeated Mongolia's Odgerel Batbayar, Nazgul Rakhayeva of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals, and Pechrada Kacie Tan in the semifinals.

During the recent edition of the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, Ochoa settled for silver as she suffered an injury, but won the gold medal in the 31st edition in Hanoi and 30th edition in Manila.

This is the Philippines’ second gold medal following EJ Obiena’s pole vault win.

Meanwhile, karate's Sakura Alforte claimed the Philippines' 10th bronze medal where she defeated Chinese Taipei's Hui Hsuian Chien, 41.90 against 41.30.

As of writing, the Philippines has a total of 12 medals, with a silver from wushu's Arnel Mandal, and ten bronzes, including two from Alex Eala.
