Elreen Ando cops Asian Games weightlifting bronze
Elreen Ando took home the bronze medal in the women's 64kg division of the 19th Asian Games weightlifting event after an impressive performance on Monday in Hangzhou, China.
The Filipina came up clutch in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 117kg, 122kg, and 126kg to momentarily take the lead before North Korea's Rim Unsim and China's Pei Xinyi surpassed her with their 135kg and 130kg lifts, respectively.
Prior to that, Ando, who only managed to finish fourth at 63kg in the previous Asiad edition in Indonesia, had two good lifts in the snatch at 93kg and 96kg after failing to lift 95kg in her second attempt.
Ando had a total of 222kg to cop the bronze medal while Rim snared the gold medal as she also set a new Asian Games record in the process for the snatch (111kg), clean and jerk (140kg), and total lift of 251kg.
Pei settled for silver after failing to lift her last attempt at 133kg for a total of 234kg.
Ando delivered the country's first weightlifting medal in these games after Hidilyn Diaz fell just short of a podium finish earlier after placing fourth in the women's 59kg division.
