RP Blu Girls bow to Italy in group stage playoff, exit Softball World Cup

The Philippine national women's softball team ended its campaign at the 2024 Women's Softball World Cup after failing to repeat over host Italy, 5-6, during their Group C third place playoff on Wednesday night at the Campo Comunale da Softball in Italy.

Prior to this, the Filipinas were able to upset the Italians on Tuesday, pulling off a 6-5 victory alongside a 5-3 win against New Zealand to earn a ticket to the group stage playoff round. They wrapped up the elimination round at fourth spot with a 2-3 card.

Italy was supposed to face Canada in the repechage, but the game was not played for health and safety reasons in consideration of the bad weather in the area and a potential late start, according to an update by the World Baseball Softball Confederation. Still, this did not affect the final positions as both countries booked spots in the 2024 Finals.

The Philippines has participated in eight Women's Softball World Cup editions and won only one medal when the Filipinas bagged a bronze medal back in 1970.
