Amanda Nunes dominates Aldana, then retires from MMA; Oliveira stops Dariush at UFC 289

UFC women’s two-division world champion Amanda Nunes has called it quits following a successful defense of her bantamweight world title via unanimous decision over Irene Aldana in the main event of UFC 289 this Sunday (PH time) at Roger Arena in Vancouver, Canada.

It was an all striking match in the opening round with Aldana showing she is a game underdog who came to fight. Nunes, however, started to take over in round two landing leg kicks and scoring a takedown.

Both fighters took turns on the offensive in round three but it was Nunes that landed clean strikes. Two minutes into the stanza, Nunes took the fight to the mat where she made a submission attempt.

Nunes landed clean punches at the start of round 4. Aldana fought at a faster pace, but was unable to land a telling blow that could change the course of the contest. Nunes scored a takedown in round 5 and then grinded away at Aldana until the final bell.

All three judges saw the fight for Nunes after five dominant rounds, earning her a unanimous decision victory in what turned out to be her last fight inside the cage. The scorecards were 50-44, 50-44, and 50-43.

"Double champion forever. Tonight is the perfect night to retire and live happily forever,” Nunes announced after the fight.

In the co-main event, former UFC lightweight world champion Charles Oliveira made a statement when he defeated the no.4 ranked lightweight Beneil Dairush. After dropping Dairush with a series of punches, Oliveira went to close the show with hammer fists at the 4:10 mark of round one.
