EJ Obiena finishes third in Poland contest
Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena returned to action and finished with a bronze medal in the 5th Irena Szewinska Memorial on early Wednesday in Poland.
Obiena, who was coming off a gold medal outing in the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia last month, cleared 5.72 meters to wind up in joint third place with USA Olympian Sam Kendricks.
Obiena first skipped 5.22m and 5.42m before it took him just only one attempt each to clear the 5.62m and 5.72 heights. Obiena still tried to register 5.82m, but failed after three vaults.
World no. 2 Chris Nielsen of USA claimed the gold medal with a 5.92-meter finish while Piotr Lisek of Poland settled for silver after clearing 5.82m.
Obiena will get back to the field on June 10 when he competes in Bergen Jump Challenge in Norway.
