UFC announces Poirier vs. Gaethje rematch, Sterling to defend title against O'Malley

UFC President Dana White made two big announcements earlier on Wednesday which are sure to shake things up in the world of mixed martial arts.

A rematch of epic proportions is signed and sealed as former interim titleholders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje are set to run it back in the main event of UFC 291 on July 29 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The pair first met inside the cage in a barnburner in 2018, where Poirier emerged victorious via technical knockout in round 4.

Poirier and Gaethje, ranked no. 2 and no. 3 in the UFC's lightweight division respectively, could potentially face the current world titleholder Islam Makachev next.

UFC bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling, meanwhile, is slated to defend his gold against the hard-hitting Sean O'Malley in the main event of UFC 292 on August 19 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Another world title fight will grace the octagon on the same night as China's Zhang Weili is scheduled to defend her UFC women's strawweight world title against Amanda Lemos.
