EJ Obiena tops Perche En Or for first gold in 2023 indoor season

Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena topped the Perche En Or tournament in Roubaix, France to get his first gold medal in the 2023 indoor pole vault season on early Sunday (Manila time).

Obiena cleared 5.82 meters in one go to top the competition. The Asian record holder attempted to clear 5.90 meters thrice but failed to do so.

China's Jie Yao placed second after clearing 5.75 meters and failing to clear the 5.82 meters thrice. French Ethan Cormont settled for third at 5.65 meters and bested compatriots Robin Emig and Mathieu Collet, who also cleared 5.65 meters, due to countback.

On January 26, Obiena bagged a silver in the International Jump Meeting Cottbus in Germany to open his indoor season campaign.

Obiena's record at indoor pole vault is at 5.91 meters.
