Eugene Torre officially inducted into World Chess Hall of Fame
Asia's first grandmaster Eugene Torre has been officially inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame.
In Chino Trinidad's report on "24 Oras," Thursday, Torre said he is very happy to reach the pinnacle of recognition in his sport.
The 72-year-old chess legend looked back on his heydays in the 1970s, saying that he was confident back then about his chances to get the GM title.
"Malaki ang posibilidad kasi alam naman natin na ang chess naman, hindi naman sa pataasan, patangkaran, palaki ng katawan, ito ay involved 'yung mental attributes mo," he said.
("There was a huge possibility because we know that chess is not a contest of being taller, building your body, what's involved is your mental attributes.")
Torre is also the Asia's first male world chess hall of famer.
In his induction speech, he thanked his wife, Maria Lina, for her support throughout the years.
"Very important talaga 'yung partner mo sa life para ma-achieve mo 'yung mga goals mo," he said.
"What happened is nag-aano yung excellence namin, nag-co-combine, mukhang nagiging maganda 'yung result."
("Your partner in life is very important in achieving your goals. What happened was our excellence combined and the result was good.")
