Geje Eustaquio shares that 'attitude' is what fighters outside of Team Lakay most need to develop
Former ONE flyweight world champion and coach Geje Eustaquio had to break some habits and help his fighters realize that they are far from being world-class fighters at ONE Warrior Series Philippines.
ONE Warrior Series Philippines is an upcoming reality TV show that features 16 aspiring mixed martial artists all over the country who went to Baguio City to train under the tutelage of Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao, ONE strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio, and Eustaquio. The pilot is scheduled to air on GTV this Sunday, September 18 at 9:35 PM.
“The challenge was there were others that I had to break some horns so they would behave. I had to show how weak they are in order for them to realize that they have to open their mind, learn new things, and that they are not the best,” Eustaquio told GMA News Online.
According to Eustaquio, the weaknesses he sees with mixed martial arts fighters outside the renowned Team Lakay stable are that of mindset and attitude.
If the rest of the teams in the country and Philippine MMA as a whole want to move forward, the former champ believes that it all starts with a change in attitude.
“Number one [weakness] that I see is attitude. They feed their head with air wherein they feel that they have proven a lot. Maybe you have proven a lot because you battled less superior fighters, but to tell you the truth they are yet to see the real monsters of this sport,” Eustaquio stressed.
“They [the monsters] are there outside doing their homework every day improving one percent at a time. My point is, we have to change the attitude and mindset of Philippine mixed martial arts if they want to catch up to the international level.”
