House commends first Filipino US Open champ Alex Eala
The House of Representatives on Wednesday honored tennis player Alex Eala for bagging the 2022 US Open juniors division singles title.
Lawmakers passed House Resolution 362 commending the 17-year-old Eala for being the first Filipino tennis player to win a Junior Grand Slam singles title, which she accomplished at the US Open tournament held in New York last weekend.
"Alex’s feat underscores the kind of [towering] height the country has achieved in tennis. Her exemplary performance, which is one of the greatest in Philippine sports history, deserves utmost commendation and distinction for the honor and glory it brought to the country," the resolution read.
The Senate previously congratulated Eala on her historic triumph.
Eala was 10th-seeded in the tournament and defeated higher-ranked players, including eighth-seeded Taylah Preston from Australia and ninth-seeded Victoria Mboko from Canada, before ultimately downing second-seeded and World Junior No.3 Lucie Havlickova of the Czech Republic en route to the US Open crown.
Among the resolution’s authors are Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte, House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City Representative Manuel Jose "Mannix" Dalipe, and Minority Leader and 4Ps party-list Representative Marcelino Libanan.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to Eala. —VBL, GMA News
