EJ Obiena places third in Athletissima behind rivals Duplantis, Nilsen

Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena settled for a third place finish in the 2022 Wanda Diamond League athletics meeting Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland on early Friday (Manila time). 

World no. 3 Obiena cleared 5.80 meters to get the bronze behind the winner and world no. 1 Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, who soared past the 6.10 meter mark to shatter the meeting record.

United States' Chris Nilsen took the second spot with a similar 5.80 output with Obiena but emerged superior due to countback.

Obiena tried to vault his way to 5.90 meters but committed three faults to bow out of contention for top spot.

The 26-year-old Olympian was coming off the 26th Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting in Jockgrim, German, which he ruled just two days ago to jumpstart the second part of his season.
