Swimming, chess bag golds in ASEAN Para Games

Para swimmers bagged four gold medals on Wednesday in the 11th ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia.
Angel Otom led the swimming team with a pair of gold from the women's 50-meter butterfly S5 event where she broke the national record after clocking in 48.07 seconds and from the women's 50-meter freestyle S5 event. Paralympian Ernie Gawilan also copped the gold in the 200-meter individual medley SM7 event, while Marco Tinamisan had one from men's 50-meter freestyle S3.
FIDE Master Sander Severino had a gold from the men's para chess rapid, while he won another gold from the team event along with Jasper Rom and Henry Lopez.
Para athlete Jerrold Mangliwan also won a gold from the men’s 400m T52 event.
Silver medals were awarded to Gary Bejino (men’s 50m butterfly S6), Russell Cundangan and Mary Ann Taquinod (J1-J2 Para judo women’s team), Ma. Ravinia Carpena (women’s shot put F20), Jasper Rom (Rapid chess PI), and Darry Bernardo, Menanrdo Redor, and Israel Peligro (men’s rapid B2 para chess).
Meanwhile, Jobert Lumanta and Jayson Ocampo (men’s double class 8), Edwin Villanueva (men’s 200m individual medley SM8), Arnel Alba (men’s 200m individual medley SM9), Darry Bernardo (men’s rapid individual B2 PARA CHESS), Mary Eloise Sable (Para Table Tennis Class 10), and Corazon Lucero, Theresa Bilog, and Charmaine Tonic (para chess women’s rapid B2) claimed bronze medals from their events.
According to the tally of the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippines already has 21 golds, 19 silver and 37 bronzes in the tournament which will close on Saturday. The medal tally as of Thursday already exceeded the 20-20-29 medal count in the Kuala Lumpur edition of the Para Games in 2017. – RC, GMA News
