EJ Obiena sets new Asian record, captures bronze in World Athletics Championship
EJ Obiena shattered his personal, national, and Asian records and clinched the bronze medal after clearing 5.94 meters in the finals of the World Athletics Championship on Monday morning (Manila time) in Oregon, USA.
Obiena easily registered 5.55 meters before it took him two jumps to clear 5.70m. The Filipino Olympian then successfully vaulted his way through 5.80m and 5.87 marks to momentarily get hold of the first spot along with Thiago Braz of Brazil.
Obiena slipped to fourth spot after committing a fault on his first attempt at 5.94m but came right back up to solo third after completing 5.94m on his second try.
With his 5.94m-performance, Obiena set a new personal, national, and Asian record. His previous record is at 5.93m which he achieved in September 2021 during the International Golden Roof Challenge.
Obiena tried to reset the records anew but he failed in three attempts at the next height of 6.0 meters to settle for bronze.
Mondo Duplantis captured the gold after clearing the 6.0 mark and even crossing the 6.06-meter mark while Christopeher Nilsen of the USA took home the silver.
